The Dark Night Of The Soul

The Dark Night Of The Soul

The Dark Night of the Soul is an experience most of us will have to face at least once in our lifetime, some might even experience it several times. Each experience of this Dark Night can last anywhere between a couple of days, to several years. The Dark Night of the Soul strips us of all light and spiritual understanding, and leaves us in darkness, alone, to face our fears and inner demons.

God evokes this powerful experience within us, and though it is extremely terryfying and traumatizing, it's true purpose serves as a spiritual cleanse for our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual bodies; God purifies us so we can grow to a greater state of spiritual understanding, and be filled with Divine Wisdom. Consider this Dark Night of the Soul as a calling card from God to embark on our unique spiritual journey within this physical realm.

A Dark Experience for a Child

My spiritual journey started with this Dark Night of the Soul when I was just a child. Having no deep fears or inner demons to overcome, the purest purpose of this dark experience was to serve as a spiritual cleanse, preparing me to receive God's Divine gift.

Dark Night of the Soul, St. John of the Cross

The Dark Night of the Soul - The Greatest Light and Satisfaction

"The thing that is most needful for us, we flee from it. And that which gives the greatest light and satisfaction to our eyes we embrace and pursue, though it be the worst thing for us, and make us fall at every step."

-Dark Night of the Soul, St. John of the Cross

The Dark Night of the Soul - The Road of Suffering

"The road of suffering is more secure and even more profitable than that of fruition and action: first, because in suffering the strength of God is added to that of man, while in action and fruition the soul is practicing its own weakness and imperfections; and second, because in suffering the soul continues to practice and acquire the virtues and become purer, wiser and more cautious."

-Dark Night of the Soul, St. John of the Cross

The Dark Night of the Soul - The Spiritual and the Sensual Desires

"The spiritual and the sensual desires are put to sleep and mortified, so that they can experience nothing, either Divine or human; the affections of the soul are oppressed and constrained, so that they can neither move nor find support in anything; the imagination is bound and can make no useful reflection; the memory is gone; the understanding is in darkness, unable to understand anything; and hence the will likewise is arid and constrained and all the faculties are void and useless; and in addition to all this a thick and heavy cloud is upon the soul, keeping it in affliction, and, as it were, far away from God."

-Dark Night of the Soul, St. John of the Cross

The Dark Night of the Soul - The Darkness and the Other Evils

"The darkness and the other evils of which the soul is conscious when this Divine light strikes it are not darkness or evils caused by this light, but pertain to the soul itself, and the light illumines it so that it may see them."

-Dark Night of the Soul, St. John of the Cross
